About
The Gold Star Girls is a young women and girl empowerment group started by a group of 10th grade Hutchison School girls. The group is tailored to young women and girls from 1st grade all the way to 8th grade.

The group is divided into different sections, or "sub-groups," which are tailored to specific grades. As our girls grow older and move to higher grades, they also may move to a different section. 1st through 2nd graders are known as the "Twinkling Stars," 3rd through 5th graders are the "Shimmering Stars," and 6th through 8th graders are the "Shooting Stars."

Activities for our Twinkling Stars include, but are not limited to, creating a storybook and reading it to the rest of the group, learning how to make expressive works of art inspired by other works of art, and creating their own, unique artwork. In addition, they will personalize their journals as the program continues.

The Shimmering Stars personalize their journal that includes their everyday life, creative stories, and art. The girls participate in team building exercises that teaches them how to work and communicate with others. Overall, the group will learn to have more confidence in their writing, art, and in their social skills as well as have confidence in themselves.

The Shooting Stars take part in active discussions about important topics in today's world to improve their social literacy as well as participate in creative writing and writing speeches about different topics to improve general literacy. These topics, which are provided by the leader, usually relate to their journey of becoming the person who they are today. The speeches will be presented to the rest of the group so that the girls can build their confidence and are comfortable in projecting their true selves to others. While doing all of this, the girls have the freedom to do journal entries in their personalized journals about prompts we provide them or prompts of their choice.

Team building activities are practiced in all of the groups as many of them can teach the girls how collaborate with others, no matter the age they are.

Our Mission
We are dedicated to empowering young women and girls of communities in Memphis, TN through literacy, art, and team building. Through improving literacy and exploring arts and crafts, girls become confident in expressing themselves through different means. Through team building, girls not only learn to empower themselves, but also learn to empower others, one activity at a time. These three goals ultimately set up our Gold Star Girls for success in the real world.

We aspire to build strong, confident, supportive, literate, and creative girls that will positively change how girls are seen and treated by other girls as well as how girls see and treat themselves.
